Dock Leads are the working supervisors on the FedEx Freight service center floor — splitting their time between operating equipment alongside their crew and directing workflow to keep freight moving on schedule. This is the first official leadership step for high-performing dock workers, carrying responsibility for zone assignments, quality checks, and real-time communication with the operations supervisor. FedEx Freight promotes the majority of its dock leads from within its existing workforce.
Position Overview
FedEx Freight is hiring Dock Leads to serve as working team leaders on service center dock shifts. You will manage a zone of 5–15 dock workers while also operating equipment yourself, ensuring your assigned dock area meets throughput, accuracy, and safety targets. This is an hourly lead position with premium pay above standard dock worker rates and direct visibility for promotion into salaried supervisor roles.
Key Responsibilities
- Assign dock workers to positions across your zone including trailer doors, sort lanes, and staging areas each shift.
- Monitor freight flow in your zone and reassign labor in real time to address bottlenecks and volume surges.
- Perform quality audits on outbound trailer loads checking for proper bracing, stacking integrity, and damage prevention.
- Operate forklifts and pallet jacks alongside your team during high-volume periods to maintain throughput pace.
- Communicate shift status, staffing needs, and freight exceptions to the operations supervisor throughout the sort.
